
The KCIS is affiliated with the Family Foundation of Kentucky, one of our state's most extreme anti-fairness organizations. Still, building a fair Kentucky means making use of every tool at our disposal. Their voter guide addresses our issues, and has one of the highest response rates of any survey we've come across. State Representative and State Senate candidates answered questions about LGBT people adopting children (#11), and about state funding for institutions that discriminate against LGBT people (#18).
US House of Representatives candidates answered questions about a Federal Marriage Amendment (#5), about including sexual orientation in anti-discrimination laws (#8), and about the State Department providing domestic partner benefits (#11).
Judicial candidates gave information about their background and interests, as well as their judicial
philosophy. Questions touch on US Supreme Court justices and decisions, as well as the US Constitution.
Project Vote Smart is a non-partisan organization that surveys state and federal candidates around the country. Once you find Project Vote Smart’s homepage, click on Issue Positions/NPAT, which stands for National Political Awareness Test. Click on Kentucky and go, Current Candidates, State Offices, and then either House or Senate depending on which race you are looking for. You may focus on the races of interest to you by using your 9-digit zip code.
Under CAMPAIGN FINANCE/GOVERNMENT REFORM, look for the question about civil unions to see how your candidates responded.
Under CRIME, look for the question about prosecuting crimes based on sexual orientation and other factors as hate crimes.
Under EMPLOYMENT/AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, there’s a very important question about adding sexual orientation to Kentucky’s discrimination laws.
Only a fraction of the candidates for state representative and state senate in Kentucky responded to the survey, but those who did offered some useful information.See Legislative Liaison Wes Wright's summary of the Project Vote Smart information in the KFA Newsroom.
Research a state-office incumbent’s track record of supporting or opposing fairness. See who sponsored the statewide Fairness bills (HB 369 and SB 99) in 2006, and who supported anti-Fairness legislation (HB 215, HB 226, SB 178, and SB 236).
Northern Kentucky Fairness Alliance sent out a series of questions for local candidates. See responses from candidates in Covington and Newport. Surveys were sent to state representatives and senate candidates but they did not respond. This is not an endorsement for any candidate and is only to be used for information.
