Board of Directors Report

Meet the Leadership Team

KFA Board members Jody Cofer and David Kuxhaus. On April 5, the leadership of Kentucky Fairness Alliance (KFA) held a retreat with Michael Mitchell, Advocacy and Planning Specialist for the Equality Federation. The Equality Federation is the "national alliance of state-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender [lgbt] advocacy organizations."

KFA’s membership in the Equality Federation is a great benefit to Kentucky’s statewide movement and helps us advance our mission on a daily basis. The retreat agenda covered standard professional development for individuals entrusted to govern nonprofit organizations, conversation around KFA’s history, and where the Board sees the organization climbing.

On April 9, the Board of Directors met for our 2nd quarter meeting. During this meeting the group took care of routine housekeeping matters, discussed fundraising initiatives, and passed a resolution honoring member David Kuxhaus whose final meeting was that day for personal reasons. His time on the Board since the summer of 2006 is greatly appreciated and likely will most be remembered for his efforts beginning in the fall of 2007 to bring “For the Bible Tells Me So” to Kentucky.

The Board ratified the first batch of individuals to serve on the Statewide Events Supervisory Committee that will take the lead in planning KFA’s 4th annual Out & About dinner, tentatively scheduled for November 8, 2008 in Louisville. We created a new ad hoc committee to be led by member David Corbett of Louisville to lead fundraising initiatives for the Board. Our 3rd quarter meeting will take place the weekend of the annual Fancy Farm political picnic in Western Kentucky so members can take part in that event.

After spending the weekend in Louisville at the leadership retreat and seeing the hard work that our Board and staff are committed to furthering, I felt I had to share with you the next time I had the opportunity a little bit of information about each of KFA’s leaders. Many times today, I believe, we forget that those serving in our leadership roles are people too with families, professions, and, in many cases, multiple leadership commitments in and outside the lgbt community.

You, the supporter of efforts to bring about social progress and inclusive public policies, should know who it is on the other side of the messages you receive from KFA, or who is allocating the funds to various programs each time you make a contribution. That said, the next two pages contain information on members of KFA’s leadership team. I hope it helps you get a sense of who is working for our community through leadership at the Kentucky Fairness Alliance.
