GLAAD Media Workshops Unite and Empower Allies
Alex Shoor, GLAAD's southern media field strategist visited Lexington and Louisville to meet journalists and community members to promote fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in mainstream media. Alex joined the KFA staff for reporter meetings at news outlets in both communities and conducted Media Essentials workshops for fairness allies. Workshop participants learned valuable media terminology, and got up to speed on preferred language and themes for media releases and interviews. Then participants broke into groups to prepare for mock interviews. "It was a real pleasure to welcome GLAAD to Louisville and Lexington," said Misty York, KFA's communication director. "Alex has been a huge help to me, and I loved sharing his expertise with the larger community." GLAAD's media field strategy, like KFA's, emphasizes telling personal stories. Combatting the anti-fairnes industry's propaganda means putting a human face on the issues that affect GLBT people, and highlighting the real families and real lives anti-fairness legislation hurts.
