From the Director's Desk

We are as strong as the number of Kentuckians who draw the line and refuse to tolerate inequality. Will you?

In a recent Lexington Herald-Leader op-ed, the Family Foundation had the audacity to call equal healthcare for unmarried couples “ridiculous”.

The Kentucky Fairness Alliance is the leading statewide organization working to promote equality for LGBT Kentuckians, and on February 22 we intend to raise our voice against the “ridiculous” position of the Family Foundation.

We must say to ourselves, "Enough is enough," draw the line, and refuse to tolerate such unfair positions. That's right. I'm advocating intolerance — for discrimination. We will no longer accept social policy that promotes anything less than fairness and respect of all individuals. Drawing that line is essential.

For the past couple weeks you’ve heard us talking about Kentuckians Value Fairness. Many of you have already signed up to participate and we are excited about the growing response.

Every fair-minded Kentuckian can add to our voice on February 22. You can join with us in a number of ways – by coming to Frankfort, by lobbying, by volunteering at an information table, or by becoming a member of Friends & Family.

If you believe in equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, join with us in drawing the line on discrimination and telling the Family Foundation that it is their position that is ridiculous. It will take the courage of our convictions to face up to what must be challenged in Frankfort.

Today I ask you to make a financial commitment to a fair Kentucky. For less than the cost of a cup of coffee or a soda per day, you can be an important part of promoting fairness in Kentucky and exposing the bigoted positions of the Family Foundation.

Consider this: Kentucky Farm Bureau insurance has over 440,000 Kentucky “members.” Each member pays a modest $25 annual “membership” fee. Do the math. That $25 “membership” fee provides Kentucky Farm Bureau with $11,000,000 (yes, that’s eleven million) annually to promote public policy that does not value all Kentuckians equally.

Their official Policy Book, distributed to all state legislators and several federal lawmakers states “The institution of marriage should only be recognized as the legal union of a man and a woman,” and “alternative lifestyles should not be taught in public schools.”

Will you become a $25 member of the leading statewide organization working to promote equality regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity? Or a $25 per month “Family” member? You’re worth it. We’re worth it! Consider it an investment in the improvement of your quality of life in Kentucky and become a “member!”
