Task force recommends domestic partner benefits at UK
UK philosophy professor Joan Callahan, the most vocal proponent of domestic-partner benefits on campus for the last 20 years, said: "I feel relieved that a committee of this stature has come forward finally with this recommendation." Callahan, the director of UK’s program in gender and women’s studies, has lived with her partner, Jennifer Crossen, for 18 years. Callahan said it would be essential to offer domestic partner benefits if UK expects to reach its goal of becoming a Top 20 public research university and "having access to the broadest pool of faculty candidates." Christina Gilgor, executive director of the Kentucky Fairness Alliance, an organization of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people, said in a statement: “We’re delighted the University of Kentucky is joining the University of Louisville in taking steps to create a fair workplace for all its employees. Not only is it great news for UK’s employees and their families, but it also sets an example for fairness as a Kentucky value.” Read the rest...
